font-size: x-large;\">THE FLOOD AND THE CITY<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-family: Arimo;\">In the<br \/>\nnight between November 3<sup>rd<\/sup> and 4<sup>th<\/sup> 1966, following days<br \/>\nof continuous rain, the waters of the Arno overflowed and submerged Florence.<br \/>\nFor 18 hours, the city was at the mercy of a raging mix of mud and debris of<br \/>\nevery kind, shortly joined by oil leaking from the broken boilers.\u00a0 The water level reached 6 meters in the<br \/>\nhardest hit neighbourhoods. Once the water receded, the scenes were<br \/>\napocalyptic. 35 people lost their lives, of which 17 in Florence and 18 in the<br \/>\nnearby towns. The damage to the city\u2019s heritage was immeasurable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-family: Arimo;\">The flood caught the Italian authorities by<br \/>\nsurprise. After an initial slip, the reaction was extraordinary. Hundreds of<br \/>\npeople from all over Italy and the world joined Florentines, the law<br \/>\nenforcement authorities and the army to form the most unusual mix of volunteers<br \/>\nand rescue teams, mostly comprised of young people. Together have managed to<br \/>\ntransform an acute emergency situation into a moment of collective salvation.<br \/>\nSoon they became known as the \u201cmud angels\u201d. It\u2019s one of the first examples of<br \/>\nspontaneous mobilizations of young people in the 20<sup>th<\/sup> century.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: Arimo;\"><i>\u201cThey ask for nothing in return &#8211; all \u00a0they want is to save culture. In just a<br \/>\nfew hours the ground floor and basement are taken over by sludge. More than one<br \/>\nmillion volumes are damaged: <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">300.000 books, 400.000 publications such as newspapers and daily<br \/>\npublications, 60.000 journals, 40.000 pamphlets and miscellaneous printed<br \/>\ndocuments. Amongst the ruined books, there are ancient manuscripts notably from<br \/>\nthe Magliabechiana and \u00a0Palatina<br \/>\ncollections, including valuable large-format ones that had been\u00a0 kept in the basement. The incunabula<br \/>\nand manuscripts kept on the first floor were able to be saved.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-family: Arimo;\">In the days immediately following the catastrophe,<br \/>\nthe National Library became the centre and symbol of rescue operations<br \/>\nspontaneously organized by young people from all over the world. From out of<br \/>\nthe mud and debris, books are rescued one by one and passed over from one hand<br \/>\nto another through human rescue chains. It is a one of a kind experience<br \/>\nthrough which experiments of drying and restoration techniques are carried out<br \/>\nwith the help of international experts, which will lead to the creation of new<br \/>\nbook restoration methods and the foundation of a major cutting-edge restoration<br \/>\nlab.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: Arimo;\"><i>\u00a0\u201cBooks were being restored even before the flood in the<br \/>\nNational Library <\/i><i>[<\/i><i>&#8230;<\/i><i>]<\/i><i>, as I think they were in all Italian libraries, but there was no<br \/>\nparticular restoration procedure. L'ALLUVIONE<\/h2><p>Nella notte fra il 3 e il 4 novembre 1966, dopo giorni di pioggia incessante, l'acqua dell'Arno esce dagli argini e travolge Firenze. Per 18 ore la citt\u00e0 rimane in balia di un miscuglio furioso di fango e detriti di ogni tipo, a cui si aggiunge la nafta uscita dalle caldaie. Il livello raggiunge i 6 metri nei quartieri pi\u00f9 colpiti. Quando il fiume si ritira restituisce uno scenario apocalittico. Le vittime sono 35: 17 in citt\u00e0 e 18 nei comuni limitrofi. I danni al patrimonio sono incalcolabili.<\/p><p>L'alluvione coglie di sorpresa le autorit\u00e0 italiane. Dopo un primo sbandamento, la reazione \u00e8 formidabile. Ai fiorentini, alle forze dell'ordine, all'esercito si sommano centinaia di persone che giungono spontaneamente da tutta Italia e dal mondo. Un amalgama mai visto di volontari, soprattutto giovani, che riesce a trasformare l'emergenza in un momento di riscatto collettivo. Sono battezzati \"gli angeli del fango\". \u00e8 uno dei primi esempi di mobilitazione giovanile spontanea del XX secolo.<\/p><p><em>\"Non chiedono nulla, vogliono salvare la cultura, vanno a spalare nei musei, nelle chiese, nelle biblioteche a salvare i capolavori, i libri, gli arredi sacri <\/em><em>[...<\/em><em>], si coprono di fango: fango della Biblioteca Nazionale, dell'Archivio di Stato, della Biblioteca Viesseux, dei chiostri di Santa Croce, dei depositi degli Uffizzi <\/em><em>[...<\/em><em>], fango di ogni istituzione culturale, fango della Sinagoga, di San Frediano, fango di ogni quartiere. (Giorgio Batini)<\/em><\/p><p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=\"1_2\"][et_pb_text admin_label=\"Testo\" background_layout=\"light\" text_orientation=\"left\" use_border_color=\"off\" border_color=\"#ffffff\" border_style=\"solid\"]<\/p><h2>LA BIBLIOTECA NAZIONALE<\/h2><p>Il 4 novembre 1966, alle 6:50 del mattino l\u2019Arno in piena rompe la prima spalletta: e\u0300 di fronte alla Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale. In poche ore il pian terreno e i sotterranei sono invasi dalla melma.<br \/> Oltre un milione di volumi rimane danneggiato: 300.000 libri, 400.000 volumi tra giornali e quotidiani, 60.000 volumi di riviste, 400.000 pezzi di opuscoli e ed estratti delle miscellanee.<br \/> Fra i libri rovinati si trovano i testi antichi delle collezioni Magliabechiana e Palatina, inclusi i preziosi grandi formati conservati nel sottosuolo. Si salvano i manoscritti e gli incunaboli, conservati al primo piano.<\/p><p>Nei giorni immediatamente successivi al disastro la Biblioteca Nazionale diventa il centro e il simbolo dei soccorsi prestati spontaneamente da giovani di tutti i paesi. Dall\u2019ammasso di fango i libri vengono recuperati uno ad uno e passati di mano in mano attraverso catene umane di salvataggio.<br \/> E\u0300 l\u2019occasione per una irripetibile esperienza di asciugatura e restauro, che permette di sperimentare tecniche diverse e - anche grazie all\u2019aiuto di esperti internazionali - fondera\u0300 nuovi criteri nel restauro<br \/> librario, generando un laboratorio all\u2019avanguardia nel mondo.<\/p><p><em>\"In Biblioteca Nazionale si restauravano libri anche prima dell\u2019alluvione, si restauravano [...], cosi\u0300 come credo nella totalita\u0300 delle biblioteche italiane, senza nessun principio.
